Faithful Living in a Digital Age—A Guide from the Every Square Inch Podcast

Technology now shapes nearly every square inch of modern life—how we work, how we think, how we relate to one another, and how we raise our children. And yet, for all its power and pervasiveness, Christians often find themselves navigating the digital world with more anxiety than clarity, more reaction than reflection. We sense that something is at stake, but we’re not always sure how to think faithfully—or act wisely—within a technology-saturated culture.

In the Every Square Inch podcast’s Technology series, Robert Cunningham offers a thoughtful, pastorally grounded exploration of these questions. Rather than treating technology as either a neutral tool or an inevitable threat, the series begins with a Christian theology of technology itself, then works outward into the concrete realities of community, attention, wisdom, church life, artificial intelligence, and parenting. Each episode helps listeners discern not just what technology does to us, but how Christians might faithfully live as salt and light in a digital age.

The Technology Series from Every Square Inch

Part 1: The Theology of Technology

Virtually every aspect of our lives is influenced by technology. It is all-encompassing, and yet there is relatively little written about how to honor Christ through our devices. The aim of this series on technology is to help Christians redeem the technology in their lives, and this introductory episode starts off the series by diving deep into the Christian theology of technology.

Part 2: Technology and Community

One massive part of our lives that has been altered by technology is community, from who we do (and don’t) have relationship with and how we communicate with them. In this week’s episode, Robert looks at the negative affects of technology upon our relationships and points us to the God who sets the example for how to relate to each other.

Part 3: Technology and Our Minds

Many studies have looked at the effect that technology has had upon our brain’s ability to think, process, and focus. The results aren’t great. In this weeks episode, Robert shows us how important it is to recognize the Internet and its endless information stream for what it is, and encourages us to return to the wisdom found in God’s Word.

Part 4: Technology and Sexuality

Perhaps the most under-appreciated negative impact of the internet era is the effect that pornography has had upon our culture. This week’s podcast contains a frank conversation about how the wide availability and nearly infinite supply of porn has harmed our society, before reminding us that God’s kindness and mercy, especially as depicted in Advent, can cover a multitude of sins.

Part 5: Practical Steps

Let’s say that you agree that, in addition to its incredible benefits, technology has had significant negative effects on us individually and on our culture as a whole. It would be natural to ask, “Then what should we do with technology?” In this week’s episode, Robert shares two practical applications to help us be salt and light in a technology-rich world.

Part 6: Technology and the Church

In this week’s episode, Robert responds to a listener question about what pastors and churches can and should do in response to the shifting technological trends in our society.

Part 7: Artificial Intelligence

This week Robert addresses a common question he’s received from listeners about the impact of artificial intelligence upon all of the themes he’s been addressing in this series. Is AI a totally new problem? Or is it a continuation of our existing cultural trends?

Part 8: Parenting and Technology (1)

It’s time to address the most common topic of all the feedback received about this technology series: parenting. In this episode, Robert shares the first two of four principles he recommends when making a plan for your children’s technology use.

Part 9: Parenting and Technology (2)

Robert shares the third of four principles he recommends when making a plan for your children’s technology use.

Part 10: Parenting and Technology (3)

How do you help your children use technology well? In this episode, Robert focuses on some helpful practices for when your children are young (before they hit puberty, which will be the focus of the next episode).

Part 11: Parenting and Technology (4)

In the final episode of this series, Robert shares some practices that can be helpful for guiding your preteen and teenage children in the area of technology.
